The Guelph Male Choir’s December 2025 concert, What Sweeter Music, is a celebration of seasonal festivals from Diwali to Christmas to Indigenous peoples in Canada. To represent Indigenous peoples’ festivals, GMC Choir Director Gordon Burnett selected The Gift by Russell Wallace. The composer had never heard it performed by an all-male chorus. Mr. Burnett asked choir members to record a rehearsal. And, he sent their recording to Mr. Wallace for his thoughts about their performance. They were warm, appreciative, and encouraging.
Kevin Dallaire is the soloist.
Below is information about Russel Wallace and the recording of the Guelph Male Choir performing his The Gift.

Russell Wallace is an award-winning composer, producer and traditional singer from the Stʼatʼimc and Lil’wat Nation. Wallace learned about traditional singing from his mom Flora Wallace from Xaxlip/Lil’wat. His music can be heard on soundtracks for film, television and theatre/dance productions across Canada and the U.S. Wallace received a Leo Award for best music for a documentary for his work on “1491” the TV series and received the Lieutenant Governor’s Art and Music Award in 2022 for artists who have demonstrated exceptional leadership, creativity, community engagement, and commitment through fostering and mentoring others in the fields of Visual Arts, Music or Performance.
Wallace’s music has been performed internationally and was featured at Biennale Arte 2022-The 59th International Art Exhibition in Venice. He works with many choirs in Vancouver and has been the Director of Indigenous Vocal Ensemble at Vancouver Community College. [Source]
The Guelph Male Choir was founded in October 1997 by Roy Connolly and Dr. Murdo McKinnon, motivated especially by their great love for choral singing in the Welsh male choir tradition.
As a non-auditioned community choir, membership is open to men of all ages and stages. The repertoire of the choir is chosen by the Director and now reflects a broad diversity of styles and genres; songs from Broadway shows, movies and operas, arrangements of folk songs, spirituals, Christmas carols and hymns.
The selections are prepared during weekly rehearsals and presented at two annual concerts – Christmas and Spring.
